Sunflower Festival Kansas City: 2026 Guide by Jason DeLong
Why the Sunflower Festival Earns a Spot on Your Calendar
Every August, the fields just outside the metro turn pure gold. The Sunflower Festival Kansas City families wait for all year is back for 2026, and it is one of the best weekends around. I am Jason DeLong, a Kansas City real estate agent and the founder of Heartland Homes KC. I have spent more than 17 years in this market.
I have also spent a lot of that time on farms and job sites. So a field full of blooms and Highland cows feels like home to me. This is not a sales pitch. It is a local's honest take on a great family day. If you want to talk real estate later, you can always schedule a call. For now, let us get you to the flowers.
What to Know Before You Go

Dates and Hours
The 2026 festival runs three weekends. Those dates are August 1 and 2, August 8 and 9, and August 15 and 16. Hours are 10am to 6pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Sunflowers grow on their own clock, so dates can shift a little with the crop. Buy your tickets online and they work on any open date.
Where It Is
The festival is at KC Wine Co in Olathe, Kansas. It sits about 35 minutes from downtown Kansas City. You are only minutes from Overland Park, Leawood, Lenexa, Shawnee, and Prairie Village. That puts it right in the heart of Johnson County.
Tickets and What to Expect
This is a ticketed event. Every guest older than two years needs a ticket. Buying online ahead of time saves money and locks in your spot. Expect more than 60 farm activities once you are inside.
Here is what families tend to love most:
Rows of tall sunflowers you can walk right into
Optional Highland cow cuddling sessions
Wine slushies and soft serve for the grown-ups
Slides, games, and screen-free fun for the kids
One quick heads up. There are no strollers, no dogs, and no infants allowed. Plan your visit around that.
The Best Photo Spots in the Field

I studied architecture at Kansas State University before I ever built a home. That training taught me to watch light and composition. It comes in handy in a place like this.
A few tips from that eye:
Shoot early or late. Golden hour makes the blooms glow.
Get low. Kneel and frame the flowers taller than the horizon.
Face away from the harsh midday sun to avoid squinting kids.
Find one tall bloom to anchor the shot.
You will take a few quick pictures and somehow leave with fifty. That is the magic of the field.
Making a Full Day of It in Johnson County
The field is the anchor, but the area around it is worth your time. Johnson County is one of my favorite parts of the metro.
Neighborhoods Worth a Drive
Olathe, Overland Park, and Leawood each have their own feel. Good schools, strong parks, and quiet streets are the norm out here. If the drive has you daydreaming about a move, you can browse our featured listings across Kansas City neighborhoods. It is a fun way to see what these areas offer.
When people ask me about the best neighborhoods in Kansas City, I always give the same answer. The best one depends on your life, not a list. Families, first-time buyers, and empty nesters all fit different corners of this metro.
Why a Farm Festival Feels Like Home to Me

My wife Jana and I run a small homestead called Free Bird Farms in Agency, Missouri. We share it with alpacas and chickens. So when I walk a sunflower field with Highland cows nearby, I am in my element.
That farm life shapes how I see property too. I notice the land, the light, and how a place actually lives day to day. Those are the same things I look for when I help a family find the right home.
Thinking About a Move While You Are Out Here?

A day in the country has a way of starting big conversations. If yours turns toward buying or selling, I can help.
I've built over 100 homes and flipped over 150 homes personally, so I know a thing or two about the process. That background is a big reason sellers trust Heartland Homes KC with hard decisions.
Here are a few simple next steps for when you get home:
Curious what your house is worth today? Get a fast, no-pressure home value estimate.
Need to sell without the repairs and showings? See how our cash home buyers Kansas City program works through our cash offer option.
Listing soon? Ask me about the Heartland Homes KC 100-point marketing plan that gets homes seen.
There is no rush at all. The sunflowers are the priority this weekend.
Plan Your Visit
Grab your tickets, pick your weekend, and go make some memories. The season is short. Three weekends, and the blooms are gone for the year.
When you are ready to talk about your next home, I am here. You can schedule a call with Jason DeLong anytime. Until then, enjoy the flowers.
