Twenty-Five Years Later: What Kansas City Still Carries From September 11

Today marks twenty-five years since September 11, 2001. I wanted to step away from real estate for a moment, because some days deserve that.

Most of us who were old enough carry a specific memory of that morning. Where we were. Who told us. The moment an ordinary Tuesday stopped feeling ordinary. Nearly 3,000 people did not come home that day, and thousands more have spent the twenty-five years since carrying what they saw and did.

Kansas City sits more than a thousand miles from Ground Zero. This city has never treated that distance as a reason to look away. Twenty-five years later, some of the clearest reminders of September 11 live right here.

A Piece of the South Tower, Here in Kansas City

This past August, a steel beam salvaged from the South Tower of the World Trade Center arrived at the National WWI Museum and Memorial as part of a cross-country tour marking this anniversary. The tour launched near Ground Zero in the spring, made more than thirty-five stops across the country, and returns to Ground Zero today, on the anniversary itself.

Kansas City was one of those stops. Local police and fire crews came out to stand with the beam. Fire trucks were posted on the overpasses along its route into the city, and crews saluted from above as the escort passed underneath.

Steel That Stayed: Memorials Across the Metro

That beam is not the only piece of the World Trade Center that found its way to this area. Communities in Overland Park, North Kansas City, and Smithville each built permanent memorials using actual steel recovered from the towers, dedicated in 2012, 2016, and 2018.

The most recent one sits in Pleasant Valley, a small community about ten miles northeast of downtown. The local fire chief spent years working to bring back a piece of the wreckage, reaching out directly to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey after earlier efforts stalled. Volunteers, including local welders, shaped the twisted steel into a memorial the community dedicated in 2021 and gathers around every September.

110 Flights, Every Single Year

Every year, firefighters from departments across the Kansas City metro, and often from well beyond it, gather downtown for a stair climb. The field is capped at 343 climbers, one for each FDNY firefighter lost that morning. Each one pulls on full gear and climbs the equivalent of 110 flights, the same number of floors as the towers, carrying the name and photograph of a New York firefighter who did not make it out.

This year's climb was the sixteenth, and it drew firefighters from more than sixty departments across twenty-plus states. It marked the 25th anniversary of the day it honors. The proceeds go to a fund that supports the families of local first responders killed in the line of duty, so the remembrance reaches families right here too.

Why the Distance Never Mattered Here

None of that undoes what happened. It just means the people here have chosen, year after year, not to let the distance from New York become distance from the memory. That felt worth noting today, on its own, without turning it into anything else.

To the families who are still missing someone tonight, and to the first responders here and everywhere who still carry that day with them: we see it, and we haven't forgotten.
